Psychedelic Somatic Interactional Psychotherapy is a legal psychedelic therapy modality that is founded on solid principles of somatic trauma therapy, with the skilled guidance and interaction of a therapist trained in working with non-ordinary states of consciousness. This process is not talk therapy, nor is it cognitive in nature, as those processes only work in ordinary states of consciousness, what we call "secondary consciousness" or your normal every-day waking state.
While this process can be done even without the aid of psychedelic substances, it becomes far more powerful and deepens more rapidly with the aid of various psychedelic medicines, which have a growing body of research to validate their effectiveness. The two most common, legal substances that are highly effective to use in this process are Cannabis and Ketamine.
The discovery of how useful cannabis is, even in very small amounts, to allow access to the subconscious and the innate wisdom of the body may be surprising to some. Even people who are regular users of cannabis for recreation or symptom reduction, are usually shocked when they experience the catalyzing role that this medicine plays in this therapeutic process. This is a highly specific somatic process, and not a random experience elicited by a drug. The shift in consciousness that is assisted by cannabis, along with the interventions of the therapist, allow the client to connect deeply with the body, and will typically trigger an involuntary, energetic, emotional process that unwinds traumas at the body level. The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), when accessed in this way, will handle the process of release in exactly the way it was designed by nature to do. Only now, the conscious mind/ego does not lock down and inhibit the release.
In this type of psychedelic assisted psychotherapy, the body will typically shake, vibrate, tremble and move involuntarily as the nervous system works its way back through traumas that are held in the body, even when there are no conscious memories of a trauma. Unexpected emotions and thoughts may also arise as the system purges what it needs to in order to achieve balance and healing. Even birth trauma can be accessed in this way, as well as complex relational traumas from early life. It is usually recommended that a series of sessions be done, especially for complex PTSD and early developmental traumas. This interactive form of psychedelic psychotherapy is also ideal for working through dissociation, (which we refer to as "cracking dissociation"). Dissociative states are notoriously difficult to address with most forms of therapy, and this is one of the unique benefits of PSIP.
Psychedelic Somatic Interactional Psychotherapy is now offered in my Santa Rosa psychotherapy practice, and I am now accepting new clients who are ready to begin this process of deep transformation. Clients must first be evaluated to be sure that this is an appropriate modality of therapy for them. It is important to have a general level of stability and support before starting this type of treatment.
Some sessions are available in an outdoor area in Sonoma County, which provides the added healing benefits of being in a natural setting with the earth, sky and trees.
